The Soft Parade

It's been just about 10 years since I started riding a snowboard. I never imagined it could take me in so many directions... some of you know my history - most don't... so here goes:

Riding got me into the mountains of New England for the first time. While those first years were utterly rewarding, as the half-life of a given winter around here can be about 7 minutes - this only gave me the thrill I was looking for on rare occasions, one season a year.

As I progressed technically with my riding, the inclination to push my own physical and psychological boundaries grew stronger - inside the sport, but throughout my life more generally. I started to feel healthier, and in turn started to eat better and crave more exercise...what a wonderful cycle.

A few years ago, I started looking for a sport that could keep my interest outside of the snow season, and operate as great cross training for riding. It took me some time, but the patience paid off.

2 years ago, I began running...and now, things have come full circle. I now find myself running mountain races, and drawn in more and more by the more rigorous aspects of running mountains and trails. Have you seen the views?

I agree with trailgrrl...fantastic picture.....where is it? funny how snowboarding lead you to running. Running is the core to many more sports than most people realize.

Thanks to each of you.... my first blog comments! The picture is from near the summit of Mt. Washington on auto-road-race-day 2008. The view is looking into Tuckerman Ravine - and having seen that lip from both below and above, I can tell you the sight never gets old.

Trailgrrl, hoping for similar weather on the summit this year - if you can still make raceday we have good prospects for a similar vistas!

Pathfinder, I wish I'd realized how much fun running is earlier in life - it would have strengthened my core for so many other sports... now I realize why there are so many runners out there - many of them are just cross-training!

I'm going to start blowing out this blog this year - so thanks for the early interest. Lots more soon!
